Getting Through the Blue: Writing About Sex
With Jen Cross

This is a course for anyone who's ever read through an erotic short story and thought, "I could do that!" as well as for the fiction writer or essayist with some blocks regarding the "sexy bits" in her/his work. Getting Through the Blue: Writing About Sex provides a fun and safe opportunity to delve into the more adventurous side of writing!

The erotic short fiction market is exploding, with an ever-increasing number of annual "Best of" anthologies and myriad population-specific collections. Erotic magazines and web-zines are constantly on the lookout for new work, and even mainstream publications are incorporating erotic fiction and/or sexuality sections to satisfy the demands of their readers. And, while writing about sex can be an end in itself, sexuality is very often an important aspect of longer works of fiction and non-fiction.

Facilitated by Jen Cross, a widely anthologized erotic writer who has led erotic writing workshops since 2002, Getting Through the Blue: Writing About Sex is designed to leave you more confident with sexual language, erotic expression, and your own writing practice. Through writing exercises that are playful, thought-provoking, and inspiring, this class will encourage you to generate exciting new erotic writing. In addition, our discussions and readings will address some of the more common concerns of the erotic writer:

* Is there a difference between erotica and pornography?

* Are there markets for erotic writing?

* What do I tell my mom? (i.e., uses of pseudonyms)

* What if my Saturday nights aren’t that exciting? (i.e., how to write about sex that you haven’t had)

* and more!

Each week’s lesson will include two writing prompts and a suggested reading. We will have the opportunity to discuss readings/topics on the Absolute Write forum.

Duration:  Six lessons with six assignments completed in six weeks

Start Date: course is currently closed

Learner Prerequisites:  This class is for people at any level of writing experience. You must be able to receive and create Microsoft Word documents to participate. The instructor will send introductory materials after your registration is confirmed, and a class evaluation when the class is complete.

Students may provide a jpg photo/headshot and a brief intro about who you are as a writer the week prior to the class start date. This is a voluntary and fun way to “meet” your classmates.

About Jen Cross:

Jen Cross is an extensively-anthologized erotic writer whose stories and creative nonfiction appear in more than 20 anthologies and webzines (some under the name Jen Collins), including Best Sex Writing 2008, Best Women's Erotica 2007, Best Fetish Erotica, Best Bisexual Women's Erotica, Nobody Passes: Rejecting the rules of gender and conformity, Blood Sisters, Glamour Girls: femme-on-femme erotica, First Timers: True stories of lesbian awakening, and many more.

She has led erotic writing workshops since 2002, and has written with survivors of sexual trauma, LGBTQQI youth, student activists, adult learners, and others. Jen received her MA in Transformative Language Arts from Goddard College, where she studied and wrote about the ways in which erotic writing can be used as a tool for sexual- and self-healing. In 2005 she founded Writing Ourselves Whole, dedicated to individual and social transformation through writing and community. A queer femme survivor of sexual abuse, Jen believes it's essential for everyone to have access to straightforward, non-shaming information about sex and sexuality. She writes to release, transform, and create space for as much unspoken  erotic as possible.
